The ".docx" Problem and Solution
Microsoft introduced a new document format in Office 2007. Documents in this format have ".docx" at the end of the document name.
If you received an email with a .docx attachment, you won't have been able to open it with older versions of Microsoft Office. The solution has been - ask the sender to send the
email again with the document in the ".doc" format, or spend money to upgrade your programs.
There is another way - Microsoft produced a Compatibility Pack for Word,
Excel, and PowerPoint file formats. After this pack is downloaded and installed, your existing Office programs
will read the new formats. It is free, easy to install, but takes a while to download.
Download Size: 37.0 MB Estimated Download Time: 1 hr 31 min (The download is restricted to a slow speed)
After installation, you can double click on a ".docx" document and it will open in Word. It is slower to open than a
".doc" document, but it will open.
Works well with a document containing words but gives varying results with documents containing images and graphics.

Another Solution
Sun Microsystems Inc. created a product based on OpenOffice.org. It is very similar to Microsoft Office - it contains sections for
Word Processing, Spreadsheets, Presentation (Power Point), writing Formulas, Drawing and Database.
It will open 154 different types of files including image files and Microsoft files - .doc, .docx, .xls, .xlsx, ppt, pptx, etc. - very universal.
Like the docx plug-in mentioned above, it works well with most files but may have trouble with complex files from other programs that contain a lot of images and graphics.
When working with its own file formats, no problems.
Well worth trying, and best of all - it's FREE.
Download Size: about 154 MB Estimated Download Time: 1 hr 31 min
